study questions:
1. Read Matthew 6:9-13. Many modern day Bible scholars teach that we should not call this the Lord’s Prayer but instead should call it the Disciples’ Prayer. This might seem trivial to you, but can you see from the prayer why they would say that?
2. Read Verse 9. Google the phrase “transcendence of God”. What are some ways this verse demonstrates the transcendence of God? The word “Father” comes from the Aramaic word Abba. This word is hard to translate into English, but has somewhat of the French or Canadian meaning of papa. How and why would this have shocked Jesus’ audience? What do you think the phrase “hallowed be your name” means? Now put these three teachings about God together. How are these concepts both incredibly worshipful and holy concerning God; while at the same time demonstrating the ability to be in a close personal relationship with Him? In what ways do you think a person could meditate on this verse for long periods of time?
3. Read Verse 10. What two things does Jesus ask for in this verse? What do you think the word kingdom is referring to? Explain the phrase “your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” This is a rich phrase. Don’t overlook it. Taking these two requests from verse ten, how might you apply them to your life?
4. Read Verse 11. Think of several other ways in which you might phrase this verse. If you actually had what this verse implies, would you be content? How might we dwell on this verse for long periods of time?
5. Read Verse 12. Does this verse seem strange to you? Does it seem challenging to you? What does true forgiveness mean to you? Using your definition of forgiveness, is this the way you want the Lord to forgive you? What can we do with this challenging verse?
6. Read Verse 13. What are some temptations we should try to avoid today? Who is the evil one? What does the idea of God leading mean to you? How might we dwell on this verse for long periods of time?
