study questions:

1. Read Matthew 6:19-20. What two commands does Jesus give in these verses? What reasons does He give for the commands? What do you think the treasures in heaven might be? See Ephesians 1:3-14, 1st Peter 1:3-7 and Revelation 4:6-11 for help. Do you think these treasures are of value? Do not answer yes or no but explain your answer. In what ways do you fall short of this command and why?

2. Read Matthew 6:21 and Exodus 20:1-3. Try and say how these two passages are related. Do you think it is hard to not have other gods before our Lord? What do you think the answer to this common problem is?

3. Read Matthew 6:21-24. How is the light and eye illustration tied to the previous verses? What lesson do we learn from this part of the study?

4. Read Matthew 6:25-27. Try and list ten things you are currently worried about. Describe how worrying about them is helping you with each issue. According to this passage, who feeds and takes care of the animal kingdom? According to this passage, how does God feel about you? What comforting lesson can you learn here?

5. Read Matthew 6:28-32. Try and think of five beautiful flowers. Have you ever thought about the fact that God in heaven (your heavenly Father) gets them all dressed up? How meaningful is that to you? What is the big idea in this passage?

6. Read Matthew 6:33. There is a “catch 22” in this verse. Can you figure out what it is? How does one go about seeking first the kingdom of God? Is this something you would like to do on a day to day basis?

What has been meaningful to you in this week’s study? What has been convicting?
