study questions:
Warm-Up. Think of a time when you were a teenager and you ignored or rejected something your parents told you to do. What were the circumstances and how did it turn out?
1. Read verses 1-3. What did God tell Jonah to do? What do you think prompted God to instruct Jonah to do this? How did Jonah respond, and why do you think he responded this way? Why do you think Jonah believed he could somehow run away from the presence of God?
2. Read verses 1-16. What did God do when Jonah was at sea? What do you think it was like to be on that ship? Describe in your own words the interaction between Jonah the other men on the ship. How do Jonah’s words in verse 9 about fearing God line-up with his actions? How did the men respond once Jonah was the sea calmed?
3. Read verse 17. What did God do with Jonah? How do you see both God’s justness and his mercy in this verse? What do you learn about God’s power in this verse and this entire chapter?
So What.
