study questions:

For the Next Lesson: Genesis 3:8-15

1. Read verses 8-9. How did Adam and Eve respond when they heard God in the Garden? Why did they respond this way (See verses 3:6-7)? What did God do? Why do you think God called out to Adam and not both Adam and Eve? How does this initial response from God demonstrate his loving character as our Redeemer? Do you believe God is near and seeking you out like here in the Garden? How so?

2. Read verses 10-13. What was Adam’s explanation for why he hid? What did God ask Adam in verse 10, and do you think God really didn’t know the answer to the question? Who did Adam blame? What does this teach you about Adam? Who did Eve blame? What does this teach you about Eve? Do we as humans still struggle to take personal responsibility for our mistakes and sin? How so? Why do we tend to blame shift like Adam and Eve?

3. Read verses 14-15. What were the physical consequences for the serpent? What were the serpent's relational consequences with human beings? Do you see this reality played out in our world today? How so? Some believe the line “he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel” is the first Messianic prophecy about Jesus. If this is a prophecy, how are these words fulfilled by Jesus?

4. So what. How do you respond to the mistakes and sin in your own life? Do you hide from God? Do you blame others? Do you deny it? How should you respond to the sin in your life (see Psalm 51:1-4,1 John 1:5-9)? What is one thing you can take away from this study that applies directly to your life?
