study questions:
For the Next Lesson: 1 Corinthians 2:1-16
1. Read verses 1-5. How would you describe Paul’s method and message he communicated with the Christians in Corinth (verses 1-2)? When Paul was with them (verses 3-4), what were his emotions? How did he speak to them? What did Paul’s interaction with them demonstrate? According to verse 5, what was Paul’s reason for how he communicated and related to them? When talking to others about Jesus, do you ever feel like you need all the exact right words? How so? What do these verses teach us about knowing exactly what to say when telling others about Jesus?
2. Read verses 6-12. What point do you think Paul is making when he says “among the mature we do impart wisdom”? What does Paul teach us about the “wisdom of God” in verses 7-10? What do you learn about the Holy Spirit in verses 10-12? Why do you think Paul was continuing to make such a big deal about the wisdom of God?
3. Read verses 13-16. How does Paul describe the “natural person” versus the “spiritual person”? How can the “spiritual person judge all things”? What does it mean to have the “mind of Christ” (see also John 14:25-26)? How can we grow so that we more and more have the “mind of Christ” (see also Romans 12:1-2, Ephesians 4:22-24)?
4. So what. In what ways does the wisdom of the world threaten to infiltrate your thinking? How can you better embrace the wisdom of God? How can you better allow and/or invite the Holy Spirit to guide, teach and counsel you (see also Ephesians 5:18, Galatians 5:16, 25)?
