For the Next Lesson – Genesis 47:13-31

1.Read verses 13-17. What was the situation that the people of Egypt were facing? What types of emotions and stresses do you think they were experiencing? How did Joseph respond to the situation? Have you ever faced a “famine” in your life? How have you handled it, and where did you turn for help? If you face a “famine” again, how would you want to handle it?

2.Read verses 18-26. How did Joseph handle the difficult situation the next year? What was the response from the people? Why do you think the people responded this way when they had lost all they owned including their money, livestock, land and even their freedom? How can the gratefulness of the Egyptians teach us how to be grateful for how God has saved us? Why should we be overwhelmingly grateful for how God has saved us?

3.Read verse 27. What was happening with Jacob’s (Israel’s) family while the rest of Egypt was struggling through the famine? Notice the words “fruitful and multiplied greatly”. In Genesis these words convey the idea of divine blessing. Why was Jacob’s family thriving? What can this teach us about how we can trust God during feast and famine in our lives? How would you describe your faith in God for taking care of you and your loved ones?

4.Read verses 28-31. What was the situation with Jacob? What did he ask Joseph to do, and why do you think Jacob asked Joseph to do this? Read Hebrews 11:21. What was Jacob’s attitude as he neared death? What do you want your attitude to be like as you near death? What can you do now to know that you will be ready when the end of your life on this earth draws near?

5. So what. What is one specific thought, truth, challenge from this passage that you can apply to your life this week.
